A Cooper’s hawk reacts to being taxonomically reclassified

Astur cooperii

Did you know that the Cooper’s hawk, Astur cooperii, was just moved to a different taxonomic branch last year, 2024? It’s true! Until then, the Cooper’s hawk, a highly adaptable feathered predator, was known as Accipiter cooperii. You’ll still see it referred to as such today. Either way, I still need a lot of practice with telling the difference between a Cooper’s and a sharpie!

I believe this is a mature male. A much larger Cooper’s hawk, likely his mate, has been sitting on a nest close to where I see this guy a lot for some time now at Red Butte Garden & Arboretum in Salt Lake City, UT.
