Curled scorpion

Suspected Paruroctonus boreus

It was a very windy weekend southwest of Delta, UT, USA, and parts of the tent I was pitching kept blowing away. I was frantically pulling rocks out of the sandy ground to weigh down the tent when I noticed that one of the underlying pebbles I’d just revealed wasn’t a pebble at all!

I’m not much of a creepy crawly ID-er, but I think this is a northern scorpion, which are one of a few species common in the southern half of Utah.

  • Fledgling Cooper’s hawk’s first perch
  • Mountain bluebird’s mountain mahogany perch
  • Northern Utah corgi dash
  • Soaring sandhill crane
  • Willet or won’t it?
  • Scaly side-eye
