A brief and beautiful visitor of Red Butte Garden & Arboretum

Nycticorax nycticorax

I’d been hoping to see this heron I’d been hearing about around Red Butte Garden & Arboretum, and on 08 April, I finally got the chance! This stocky predator had been hanging around for a few days, likely a brief stop on its spring migration journey. It had plenty to eat, as Red Butte Creek is occasionally stocked with cutthroat trout.

It’s fairly common to see Nycticorx nycticorax in pockets of wetland in central Utah this time of year through summer, but to see one in the beautiful landscape of Red Butte’s spring splendor was truly a sight to behold.

  • Willet or won’t it?
